Who we are

Part Aboriginal founded. Aboriginal chaired. Aboriginal led.

Workings is a numeracy engine for Kindergarten to Year 10. Every child gets questions pitched at their frontier, with maths and reading measured apart. It was co-founded by Mark Miles, a Wiradjuri mathematics teacher, who chairs the board and owns the curriculum.

Two co-founders. A maths teacher in the chair.

Mark Miles

Co-founder and Chair · Wiradjuri mathematics teacher

Mark is a Wiradjuri mathematics teacher with a Masters in Mathematics and a career spent teaching the subject to the full range of a school. He chairs the board and owns the curriculum: the sequence, the dependencies, the question bank, the threshold at which a child has actually mastered something, and the approval of every question before a child sees it.

Cale Maxwell

Co-founder · Product and engineering

Cale builds the product and runs the commercial side. He has spent 20 years building technology inside large organisations, most recently running a technology and transformation consultancy across Australia and New Zealand, and building AI systems that have to hold up under real scrutiny. He holds a postgraduate qualification in neuroscience. He doesn’t own the curriculum, and the architecture makes it impossible for him to change what counts as a correct answer. That’s deliberate.

A maths teacher owns the curriculum.

The sequence of skills, what depends on what, the mastery threshold and the approval of every question sit with Mark, not with a model. The architecture means nobody else can change what counts as a correct answer.

Aboriginal shareholders hold the largest stake and control the board.

Workings is an Aboriginal co-founded and Aboriginal-controlled business. There are two co-founders, one of them Aboriginal, which is why we say part Aboriginal founded. Mark chairs the board, and Mark and Cale co-lead the business.

Verified ownership and registration details are supplied on request. Email hello@workings.com.au.

Community owns culture.

Cultural content in Workings is co-designed with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators and communities, covering what each community chooses to share. Every piece is approved before a child sees it, and AI written cultural content is prohibited.

Data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children is governed consistently with the Maiam nayri Wingara Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles.

What we hold ourselves to.

  • Never give the answer

A stuck child gets a hint, a step down, or a walk back to a prerequisite. They take the last step.

  • Maths and reading are measured apart

A child is never given more subtraction because they couldn’t untangle a sentence.

  • The AI writes the words. It never decides the answer

Code computes every answer on the server. No child’s name, email or school is ever sent to a model.

  • No time pressure, ever

No clocks, timers or countdowns. Twenty minutes is how long, never a deadline.

  • Data stays in Australia

Stored in Sydney, with each school’s data kept apart in the database.

How we handle children’s data

Start where your child is.

Fourteen days free. Twenty minutes a day. Every question pitched for your child, and the last step always theirs.
